The Travel Blues

Posted by Cara Busson Clark on Aug 31st 2010

So, I know it sounds crazy, but a lot of my clients HATE traveling because they're afraid of eating poorly!! Let's talk about this..traveling and vacations should always be something to look forward to, not worry about.

I know what saying though because when I flew home from San Fran a couple weeks ago, the gentleman who sat next to me was how NOT to travel. Let me tell you why!

In the short 1 hour flight, this is what I saw him eat:

1 Firewood personal pizza.

--Estimated at 1000 calories made up of 60 g. fat, 85 g carbohydrates, maybe 16 g. protein.

1 Coke

--About 140 calories made up of 39 g. carbohydrates!

1 package of cookies

--About 200 calories made up of 10 g. fat and 30 g. carbohydrates!

1 Sprite

--About 140 calories made up of 38 g. carbohydrates!

TOTALS: 1480 calories made up of 192 g. carbohydrates, 70 g. fat and just 16 g. protein.

I'm not trying to tell you not to enjoy your life, but whoa this could put you back a few lbs! I eat about 2000 calories a day and this guy ate close to that in one sitting. Not only that, but he is going to have a surge of energy because of the insane amount of carbs and fat(the only 2 essential nutrients that we obtain energy from) and then will come crashing to the ground. Not to mention all of the fat that he's stored because of the overdose of carbs/fats.

Here's a better suggestion using the same food idea!!!

1/4 of pizza
--250 calories made up of 15 g. fat, 21 g. carb and 4 g. protein.

Diet Coke
--0 Caloires

Luna Bar(They sell them in the airport stores)
--210 calories made up of 6 g. fat, 22 g. carb and 16 g. protein.

Water- Always a better option!!!

TOTALS: 21 g. fat, 43 g. carb and 20 g. protein, which leaves room for about 1 cookie!!!

***This is not something I would suggest on a normal day, however, I know and understand the need to treat yourself once in awhile.

Here's what I actually had that same plane ride:

1 Clif Builder bar
--270 calories of 8 g. fat, 25 g. carbs, 20 g. protein

1 Soy Latte
--170 calories of 5 g. fat, 23 g. carbs, 9 g. protein

TOTALS: 440 calories of 13 g. fat, 48 g. carbs, 29 g. protein

This was a treat to me :) Some people tell me I'm too focused on what I eat that I don't enjoy my life. I disagree, I focus on my food choices, so I do enjoy my life with sustained energy, lean muscle, healthy digestion and overall immunity to sickness!!
